After raising 14 children to adulthood, I’ve seen the principles of this proverb first hand.  You can spend time explaining why discipline is necessary and even back it with scripture that clearly indicates that discipline occurs because of love:

For whom the LORD loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

~ Proverbs 3:12

Some with receive it and others will reject it. Being a father is not giving your child everything he or she wants.  It’s about loving them and training them up into adulthood for our Heavenly Father.  This requires discipline.

I have noticed over the years, that the ones who can receive that discipline, advance, whereas the ones who despise it lead themselves to ruin.

Even as adults, we are not unlike this.  We love playing the game of trying to manage sin until the LORD disciplines us.  Listen to the reproof you experience as your read His word.  Receive it with a soft heart; ready to change.  Discipline bring a us to a place of life!

Reflection

Where in your life are you resisting discipline?

What do you need to do to overcome that?

Pray that God would confirm you all the more to the image of Christ.

Prayer

Father, teach our hearts to delight in Your word, instruction, and discipline.  For You are a loving God who sees and knows all.  Your discipline is life-giving.  Help us to fully receive it.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Have you ever read all of Psalm 119?  I memorized close to 1/3 of it once.   To me it’s an amazing picture of a relationship with a righteous and holy God.  When He reveals Himself to us, we are overwhelmed by His lovingkindness. We are revived by His Word.  Delight fills our heart and we seek to honor Him with all we are.

Our minds desire to Know, Live, and Speak the Truth of His Word and are set on His will.  The Psalmist understands that He cannot do these things in His own strength but needs the power of God and therefore cries out to Him for help.  He is so dependent on God and he delights in God’s faithfulness.  Quite counter cultural to our do-it-yourself world.  We are not striving for independence but obedient dependence.
Personal Reflection

Do you love the Word of God including everything it asks and commands of You?  Do you long for it daily?  Set aside some time and read deeply Psalm 119.  Make notes of everything the Psalmist is passionate about.  Where does His passion come from?

Prayer Focus

Gracious and faithful Father, we come before you with hearts and minds that forget the Truth.  We confess that our minds are consumed with the things of this life.   Revive us according to you loving kindness that we may seek your word, will, and statutes.  Teach us your ways that we may walk blameless and bring Your Name honor  and glory.  Write your Word on our hearts. May we love you every moment of every day in the power of Christ, Amen!

God has a unique way of partnering opposites together as we walk out the Christian life.  We are to understand and embrace our weakness so we can experience His strength.  We are to suffer with Him that we might have joy.  As I was reading in His Word this morning two more came to mind.  Fear and Delight.

It’s should not be surprising that God’s ways are different than ours.  His word in Isaiah 55, reminds us that His ways and thoughts are higher than ours.  Not just different, but higher.  We may not understand at first, but His pairing of opposites results in His glory.

As I took in Psalm 112, the words FEAR and DELIGHT ignited my mind like fireworks.  There is an appropriate fear and reverence we are to have for our God.  It is a fear that reminds us that in our strength we cannot stand before Him.  Yet, in Hebrews 4 we are told to, “draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” This is possible given our relationship through Christ.

Delighting in the law of the LORD would be an impossibility if it were not for the wondrous fulfillment of God’s law in Christ.  If we put up our best works next to the law, we all fall short.  Because of His suffering work at the Cross, we are able to have joy for eternity.  We can truly delight in His word, look past our imperfection and on to Christ’s righteousness that He has given us.

Receive today what Christ has done for you, fear your God appropriately and delight in His law, for by its fulfillment you have been set free!

Reflection

Do you have a healthy fear of the LORD?

Are you delighting in His word?

Make a point today to answer these questions honestly and take action to move these two questions to a “Yes!”

Prayer

LORD, You know our hearts.  Help us to fear And revere You and give us a heart that desires Your word.  May we run hard after You.  Thank You for Rescuing us from our own sin and adopting us in Your family.  May our hearts never wander from this beautiful truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
