She continually prayed for his conversion for 35 years before God answered her prayer! One day when she was feeling low and that her prayers were not being heard, St. Ambrose (who became a great influence on St. Agustin) reassured her and said to her (I am going from memory) “The child of those tears shall not perish” meaning God would not let such prayer from the heart go unanswered! It is a great lesson on the perseverance of prayer. You state it well Brian by saying “The dark days are necessary” because it drives the roots of faith deeper into our hearts!
