How To Be The Greatest

In this world, there is a constant pressure to be the greatest.  Whether it’s sports, work, or even evangelizing.  We are always looking to see who is the best.  There’s nothing wrong with excellence, nor using the talent God has given.  The trouble comes when we desire the glory more than we desire God.

When we become Christians, true followers of Christ, we are no longer our own. Our lives were bought and paid for with Christ’s blood and we willingly surrendered them. So let us not try to take them back.

Our quest to be the greatest is common to all, even the disciples.  Jesus saw this and remarked that whoever wishes to be great shall be your servant.  And whoever wishes to be first will be your slave.  This is possible only when our eyes are completely fixed on Christ and not on ourselves.  We have everything we need in Christ that we may serve all who God leads us to serve.  After all He is the greatest example – humbling Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross for you and me.

Personal Reflection

In what ways are you still pursuing greatness and glory for yourself instead of pointing to the greatness of Jesus?

Who can you be a servant to today to bring glory to God?

Prayer Focus

Merciful Father, we confess to you that far too many times we are seeking the glory that is rightfully yours. Your Son is the One who fulfilled the law and is our righteousness.  Conquer our pride and teach us to be servants that are content in the shadow of your glory.  May our lips forever praise you and our eyes never leave the face of Christ. May we serve those around us with zeal and a passion for Jesus. In His Name we pray, Amen!
