Comforter And Master

As I was driving down interstate 75 on my way to Florida I was struck by the number of signs for liquor, adult clubs, and the lottery.  All of these things may seems harmless at first but underneath the surface they all seek to be your master.

The fact of the matter is, we often need a comforter; One that can help us through the tough times and make us feel better.  All three of the signs above promise comfort but instead delivery slavery.  I don’t speak this as a judgemental outsider, but as one who has been under control of a slave master.

Slaves are not free, not just physically, but also spiritually, mentally, emotionally and financially.  A slave master will stop at nothing to make sure you remain in bondage and will pull out all the dirty tricks to keep you there.  He will deceive you into thinking these thoughts:

     “You are worthless”

     “You’re alone”

     “You have no purpose”

     “You’re unloved and unlovable”

These are all lies.  The word of God tells us:

That if God cares for the sparrow, how much more valuable are we?

He sent us one and only Son to die for us.  Does that not communicate immense value.

When Jesus gives the Great Commission, he is giving us purpose and promises that we will never be alone.

Again God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ dies for us(Romans 5:8).  His love for us has never been dependent on our performance.

So as you choose your comforter and master choose wisely.  For not all masters care like our Heavenly Father.  Choose Him and you choose life. Choose other comforters and you choose to invite death into every corner of your life

Reflections

Where are you most likely to choose a comforter and master other then God?

Have you really been satisfied, or is it leaving you even less comforted?

Turn from these comforters and confess to your Father in heaven that you have Chosen another over Him. He will hear your cry and reestablish your feet on solid ground

Prayer

Father, we have forgotten You and Your power to comfort and save.  Empower us to repent.  Remind us of Your truth and let us not be deceived.  For you alone can rescue, You alone can save.  You are our rock and comforter, let our eyes be fixed and content in Your provision of Christ. By His name, we pray. Amen!

  1. We as a culture have become such an impatient people, it seems. Our minds are deceived if we let them, to look for quick answers to life’s problems, aka instant gratification. The Lord would have us be patient and steadfast in our faith in Him and His provision, which often requires waiting, a concept with which we are more and more unfamiliar . 2Peter 3:8f: “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient towards you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” We have wonderful promises to be fulfilled in our future if we will be patient and steadfast. I , too, spent years seeking fulfillment in other ways than the right way, but am on a better and sure path that He has provided as for all who belong to Him. There is such an awesome future for His children, “a new heaven and new earth in which righteousness dwells. “. 2Peter 3:13. And so Peter urges us to “take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2Peter 3:17. So let’s put our blinders on to things that tempt us and pursue fellowship with other believers who will encourage and sometimes exhort us, if need be. I’m so thankful for those true friends!
